In the Pilbara, Rio Tinto has a network of fifteen mines, three shipping terminals, and the largest privately owned heavy-freight railway in Australia and supporting infrastructure. Pilbara operations are assisted by Rio Tinto’s Operations Centre in Perth.
In 2007, Rio Tinto Iron Ore Asia was established in Singapore as the marketing and distribution agent of iron ore from Western Australia to Asia. In addition to Singapore, Rio Tinto Iron Ore Asia has offices in China, Korea and Japan.
The Next Generation initiative is sponsored by Rio Tinto and provides opportunities for high-calibre students to participate in specially curated In the Zone events. These events are designed to increase student interaction with professionals in the business and government sector who work in an Asian context.
Eleven Rio Tinto education champions and eight Rio Tinto scholarship holders attended the In the Zone forum in 2014.
